Interview:
Cat Stancik: It’s all about the room where it happens, right? Nettie Owens: Absolutely. And you just joined us in the room where it’s happening right now. What is the value of being in the room where it’s happening? You’ve had a lot of experiences being in the room. Tell me about just a few of them. Cat Stancik: I’ve been in some pretty secret rooms. I’ve been behind the scenes in a lot of different events. And I’ve been with hundreds of people, 1000s of people and 10s of people. And I’ve been in the room with some of the top marketers in the world. Nettie Owens: You were in a Russell Brunson room. Cat Stancik: We couldn’t pay to get access to it. I mean, basically, people were saying I’ll pay millions of dollars to get access to it. And people they were being told, “No.” Nettie Owens: Actually, the more fabulous person in that room was probably our mutual acquaintance, Molly Mahoney, because Molly was in that room. Cat Stancik: Yep. I saw the sparkle pants upfront and personal, gave her a big hug. I should share some of those photos. In terms of credibility, I was in the room where it happened and I’m in the room where it happens a lot, I have a great network, lots of connections, people that I actually consider friends and don’t use as the “star power thing” or whatever. There’s a difference in all the different kinds of rooms that I’ve been in. That difference is the quality of the person. I’m not saying that the quality of the person in the big event that I was at wasn’t very high. But there is something to be said about being in a space where people are wanting to create. I always think of you when I say this, many people are in a space where they create a lot of movement, they’re busy, they’re doing stuff, they’re getting some stuff done. But there’s a difference between movement and momentum. And your room is specifically designed to create the momentum. So if you’re in doubt as to whether or not you’re creating movement or momentum, Momentum Live helps create that tuning fork, it creates that space, and provides an environment where you can see where you are creating movement and where you are creating the momentum in your business. Because momentum is where the millions come from. Nettie Owens: We talked about the difference between being busy and being productive. And busy-ness versus business. Creating the right kinds of movement, the right kinds of action that are going to get you growth. I don’t know about you, but as a mom and a business owner, and wife, all those things…. Cat Stancik: And teacher now because we’re homeschooling! Nettie Owens: Exactly, it is not hard to be busy. Cat Stancik: It’s like the analogy, are you buzzing? Or are you creating honey? Which one? Are you just spinning around just kind of creating movement? Because the bees dance? Right? What is your intention? Is your action actually producing results? The honey. You can’t create momentum without taking space and time to really look at first, grounding yourself and asking, “Alright, you know, let’s be real. It’s a gut check. How am I doing?” Maybe things are amazing. If so, what’s working? How am I being amazing? How do I do what I do? And how do I keep repeating that? You can’t do that without creating that space that time to really go in and ask the deep questions. Could you do it by yourself at your office and you know, at your home or whatever? Maybe. But, you probably haven’t. Do you have other successful people looking at your plan and saying, “Whoa! Big huge block here. Right here.” Nettie Owens Or even better, “Enormous opportunity that you aren’t paying attention to” You just need to turn your head and you can stop being busy and you can start being effective at what you’re doing. You came to Momentum Live in March 2020, the Pandemic Version. If I recall, you were surprised at the “room where it happened” feeling. What made you decide to come and what did you find there? Cat Stancik: I decided to come because I am an action taker. Recently I was doing a launch, the launch was not yet over. And I’m thinking, “Alright, what am I moving on to next? What’s the next thing on the horizon?” That’s just how I roll my business. I’m very action focused. I’m very, “here’s a plan, go and implement it, go, go, go, go go.” The problem is, that when you’re always go-go-going, you might be go-go-going off the cliff. You don’t realize because you’re so tunnel focused that you don’t look at what’s not the next step, but three steps forward. Three steps forward is a big crash and burn energetically such as you’ve spent too much and you need self care. That was one of thing that was an unintended benefit, which is there was space and time for me to be away from my family. I love to be able to look at my business to get other people’s eyes on my business. I try to go into any event kind of unattached as to what I expect which helps me be surprised, because then it allows me to let people be themselves and show up in their brilliance instead of me coming in with a judgment or anything like that. There’s a gamut of the level of experience and the level of success. Some people were phenomenally successful and something happened. Other people are ramping it up. Other people are swinging hard, and they’re hitting the ball, right? There’s that gamut. Everybody has something to contribute. Let’s say there’s someone who’s at six figures in their business, right? But they could have been running like Microsoft before. Nettie Owens: That can be a rough switchover, by the way. And so we hear about it a lot from people who left a corporate job or were otherwise at the top of their game to start their business. That can be a bit of a bumpy road. Cat Stancik: What is beautiful is that people have these skill sets that they can transfer over into their entrepreneurial journey. It could be someone who maybe was unemployable and who’s now you know, close to a million dollars in their business because they needed to be the boss, not an employee, right? Amazing people. One of the most amazing things that you have, is that you create phenomenal communities, wherever you go. You have an entourage. You express, “I believe in you. I believe in me. I believe in anybody that you bring into the room.” It just creates this tribe of empowered people. Men and women alike, who are really out there making that positive impact in the world. And when you get access to those people, and they can look at your business, they’re looking at it unattached. You have your fears in yourself and what you can accomplish that blinds you to what’s possible. But when you’ve got someone who can see the path clearly, you’ve got other people who’ve been there done that in some capacity, who can tell you what to avoid and what to double down on, it helps create that momentum in your business. It accelerates your results. But you don’t get that unless you create the space and the time in your business to actually go and focus on your business and not always be in your business. Summing up. What is in the “Room Where It Happens?”

This week has been all about leaders and leadership. We kicked the week off with Vanessa Judelman sharing “What Businesses Need to Know Right Now About Leadership.” Then you were introduced to Dana Moore of Inspired Lightwork.
But today, I want to know what you think about leadership. More specifically – when you hear the words leader or leadership – what comes to mind?
But guess what? You’re a leader! Why would I say this? Because – whether you wanted it or not – you’ve been called to leadership. Just take a moment to read this quote: “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” —John Maxwell That’s YOU! After all, you wouldn’t have started your own business if you couldn’t do those things! But let’s break them down – in case you need a little reassurance! A leader is one who knows the way. This one is probably the easiest to recognize in yourself. You’ve started down the path with your business – and no matter where you are on the path – you know where you want to go. It’s not easy at times – and the path may not be as clear as you’d like – but you’re ready to tromp it down – or find a new approach – to get where you want. That’s a leader. That’s you. A leader goes the way. We often talk about how leaders should lead by example and exemplify the values they want to see in those around them – and you do that! Day in and day out, you show the best of yourself to others – and you should be so proud of that! That’s a leader! That’s you. A leader shows the way. Remember a few weeks ago when we talked about “Sharing Your Brilliance,” and I encouraged you to set the intention of working in your brilliance and sharing it with others? That’s exactly what “shows the way” is all about. Whether you share it with your clients or with those in your expert network as you help one another achieve goals – you’re showing how it’s done and making a difference. That’s a leader. That’s you. And don’t worry if you don’t have the whole leadership thing down to a science quite yet. As Vanessa told us: Leaders are made! And you can always learn new skills that are going to help you be the leader you want to be in the long run. John F. Kennedy, 35th President of the United States, said, “Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” And he was so right! Please comment below. I would love to hear from you. Let me introduce you to Dana Moore. Dana is a Spiritual Leadership Development Coach, and she helps business owners lean into their full leadership potential – which, in turn, can bring you to that next level in business or your life that you’ve been striving for!
And yes, there is plenty of room for the spiritual side of your life in your business. In fact, when you read interviews from some really powerful businesswomen (Oprah Winfrey and Arianna Huffington – just to name two!) – they talk about starting their day with a spiritual practice. Dana uses Personal Energy Management Practices (PEMP), along with traditional strategic planning and organizational management, to clarify your goals and get you the confidence you need to accomplish them. Sounds good, doesn’t it? In Dana’s very own words, if you’re ready to “activate your inner Goddess” – then reach out to her. You can click here or simply text “GODDESS” to 411321 to connect with her. Gentlemen – don’t worry, “Goddess” need not exclude you. There is a lot we can all learn from leaning into spiritual and divine practices. So, could you do me a favor? Watch your inbox Saturday for the next email from me and share this one with some dynamic leaders in business you may know! It would be much appreciated. Please comment below. I would love to hear from you. Why is it so difficult to transition into a leadership position?
Let’s start with the age-old question: Are leaders born or made? Leaders are definitely made. Some people are born with a certain amount of charisma and know-how to lead, but most leaders are made. The problem is that in most organizations, people are promoted into leadership roles without education. And I always say, “Can you imagine if you had a teenager, and it was time for them to learn to drive. and you just said, ‘Here are your car keys! Off you go and drive!’” You would never do that. It’s the same with the leadership role. Why do organizations promote people into leadership positions and then basically say, “Drive!”? Because most people learn to be an architect or an engineer, or whatever their skill set is when they’re in college and university, and then go into the work world. They become an expert in that area and get promoted into leadership – because they’re good at their job. But leading involves a completely separate set of skills. “In her book “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success” Carol Dweck wrote, “Growth mindset is based on the belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts.” And with this mindset, leaders can definitely be made.” What does learning leadership look like? Leadership is vast. It’s complex. And the first thing that I do is always break down leadership into three pillars. I assess my clients against these three pillars and where they have gaps, we then focus on development. The first pillar is know myself. Leaders must be self-aware. The second pillar that’s critical for leaders is manage my team. You have to know how to coach how to develop your people, how to give feedback, and have crucial conversations. The third pillar is lead my business. Leaders have to know how to execute strategically. For example, a lot of leaders will say to me, “Vanessa, my boss has told me I need to be strategic, but I don’t know what that means.” So, that’s an example of a skill that I teach people. I teach them that there are three parts of strategy. They learn exactly what it looks like to be strategic. In that “lead my business” section, change management and leading change are skills that I teach my clients as well. All leaders have to lead and manage change, especially in today’s environment. But they don’t know that there are a set of skills and tools that you can leverage to communicate change and to bring people along in terms of changing their mindset, so they’re more aligned when it comes to your change plan. You have to give feedback, but a lot of times, people fear feedback because they don’t know how to give it properly. But that’s a skill that you can learn. There are tools associated with giving constructive feedback that leaders can learn and practice. “You practiced your skills for your designated profession over and over before you stepped into that role. But what about your leadership skills? How did you practice those skills? Or were you ever really taught them?” What are the most important key skills for leaders to develop first? It’s interesting that you mentioned growth mindset because I love the work of Carol Dweck. I am a huge fan. And she talks about fixing the growth mindset. So, I think a growth mindset and self-awareness are huge. That’s the first step – because when you’re in a fixed mindset, you believe everything is set in stone. Nothing can change. But when you’re in a growth mindset, you know that with hard work, you can focus on anything and develop a new skill. Leaders have to learn new skills every day. At this time, for example, leading virtually. Many of my clients have never done that before. That is a new skill. I had a conversation with a client last week, and she said, “I have to give some negative feedback. Am I allowed to even do that in this stressful environment?” I said, “Of course you are. I encourage it. Life goes on.” Then she asked, “But how do I do that when I can’t meet someone for coffee and do it face-to-face?” So, the growth mindset is important. Feedback is important. And coaching is really important as well. “Coaching is a wonderful skill to have. The bottom line of coaching is really exceptional communication and listening skills – and those are definitely learnable. And some people may have some innate capabilities. But beyond that, you can learn great questions to ask, and you can learn to stop talking and be a good listener.” The reason I have these three pillars: know myself, manage my team, and lead my business is so my clients are really clear on the core components of leadership, which is a very broad topic. I have integrated these three pillars into an eight module leadership program. I take leaders of all levels through this program to ensure that everybody understands the same tools and uses the same language across the organization. For example, there is an assessment tool that I love to use, and I highly recommend organizations assess all of their people. This allows people to understand their strengths and weaknesses. It also allows leaders to understand how best to coach and motivate their people. I recommend all organizations have a leadership development strategy in place. Having strong leaders in an organization is critical to moving any strategy forward. It can take years to roll out a strategic leadership plan because there are so many components to it. “Many organizations have emergency plans, and everybody knows the protocol when there’s an emergency. So, in the same way, what’s the protocol for leadership?” Organizations that are doing leadership well have leaders that are self-aware. It means that their leaders know how to coach and develop their teams. It means that leaders really know how to take the vision of the organization, trickle it down and hold people accountable. 3 Action Steps
Be sure to connect with Vanessa Judelman on LinkedIn or on her website. P.S. Vanessa’s interview, along with 46 others, are part of my soon-to-be-released book, What Businesses Need To Know Right Now. You can check it out here at WhatBusinessesNeedToKnow.com. Please comment below. I would love to hear from you. Did you get a chance to watch Ryan Barrett’s interview on “What Businesses Need to Know Right Now” earlier this week? He really drove home the importance of protecting your company and your data from a cyberattack – because as he said, “It’s not about if you will get hacked; it’s when you will get hacked.”
And you may be thinking, I’m not quite to the stage in my business where I need to worry about that…but you probably are. Because it’s never too early to have those strong systems in place…for all aspects of your business. In fact, it’s essential. Systems are those written procedures that show exactly how you do something in your business. They are unique to you and your business. And I’ve got to admit that systems make me a little giddy – because I believe in them 110%! (Yes, that’s the professional organizer in me coming out!) The benefits from systems are practically priceless. 1. Systems create consistency. If you want to bring consistency to all of your clients – systems will help you do this – because there’s no longer any guesswork involved. You know what needs to be done. 2. Systems improve customer satisfaction. And guess what? When you have consistency – you will improve customer satisfaction! And this means your clients will stick with you – and they’ll tell others. 3. Systems make onboarding new employees easier. Bringing on people to support your business is part of growth. But without systems in place, onboarding new employees can take up precious time and leave new employees feeling like they don’t know what’s expected of them. 4. Systems reduce costs. Who doesn’t want to reduce costs? That means a better bottom line for you. Systems can help streamline things and save you money. 5. Systems keep you organized. Yes! With systems in place, you will be more organized! If things are starting to fall through the cracks – systems can help. (This one just speaks to me!) 6. Systems make change easier. Change is inevitable. It’s part of growth. And without systems in place, it can seem chaotic. But with them in place, change can be much easier – for everyone. 7. Systems allow you and your employees to put your focus where it needs to be. You are an expert – and you probably have hired employees who are experts. Systems allow each of you to put your focus on your area of expertise – and that is good for your business. 8. Systems save you time. You want to be able to spend time with your family and friends, right? Or on the golf course? Or reading a good book? Strong systems can help give you that time. 9. Systems improve communication. Everyone knows that good communication is important – with employees and with clients and customers. Systems can improve that communication because everyone will be on the same page and understand what the expectations are. 10. Systems allow for growth. There’s only so much you can do in a day. But with systems in place, you can free yourself up to grow your business and reach those goals you set for yourself. I could go on and on about the importance of strong systems, but I’m going to leave you with that top 10 list! (After all, who doesn’t love a good top 10 list?) If you want to talk more about systems for your business – reach out to me – because they really are my jam! Or – better yet – join us for Momentum Live Virtual 2021! (I promise it will be a day filled with more than just talk about systems!) Please comment below. I would love to hear from you. I would love to hear from you. Ryan Barrett has spent the majority of his career consulting with organizations where data is critical to their business. He’s seen technologies evolve into one of the most critical components to ensure a viable and scalable operation. With the current climate, and with so many businesses that have transitioned their employees to work from home and are transitioning them back, there’s a lot to think about when it comes to keeping your company data secure. Ryan is sharing what businesses need to know right now about cybersecurity.
What do business owners need to know about cybersecurity threats? The biggest thing that businesses need to know is that your information that you think is private – it really isn’t. There are many different instances out there – for example, with passwords for your everyday activities, your email, Facebook, LinkedIn, whatever – that have most likely have been compromised in the past. You don’t realize that the nefarious actors out there already know that password, and so, multifactor authentication is the absolute way it has to be. What does that mean? Here’s something that we’ve all done. You log into your bank account, and they send you a text message to make sure it’s really you signed into the bank account. What that allows for is that if your password does get compromised out there on the dark web, and nefarious actors then try to use that password, you’re always going to get that second-factor text message that asks you to please enter this code that we’ve sent you. I would say that as a business owner, you have to realize that your passwords may have already been compromised from many different services, not because they’re trying to hack your computer. But LinkedIn has been compromised. Staples have been compromised. Facebook has been compromised. So, change your password often. Always use multi-factor authentication and keep your information as secure as possible. LastPass is our favorite password reader/manager. And what’s so great about LastPass? What’s so great is that I don’t know any of my passwords. Why is that? Why can someone say that they don’t know their passwords? With something like LastPass, I know one password to unlock my LastPass or to unlock my password generator. And that allows me to create a Facebook password that I don’t know – it creates a 16-digit password of all different characters and numbers, and it auto-fills it on my iPhone. It auto-fills in on my web browser, and I don’t need to know it. And therefore, even if it does get asked or guessed in some weird fashion, it doesn’t matter; I can change it in an instant. LastPass can auto-generate a password for you really quick. “We can take simple steps to help protect our data. And the first step is really being mindful about our passwords. It’s about being mindful about changing them and using things like a password generator to make sure that we’re secure.” What should we be looking at for ourselves or our employees beyond the first level of protection for data? We’ve discussed a password manager and multifactor authentication. Next, I would say dark web monitoring. My email address is one piece of this password. So, whatever your email may be, I would monitor the dark web to see what they know about me. So, if I use the password “yellow,” or “Google” or “green,” or whatever it may be, and I do some variations of that, I have to be mindful that if I use that password, people already know that – so that’s one key thing. We always use our email addresses as the first token, and the second is the password, so anything that you can do to augment that would be ideal for a business owner today. “Are you monitoring your information on the dark web? Do you know how to do this? It may be time to reach out to an expert who can assist you with these things in order to protect your data and your business.” What should we be monitoring for? Is there something beyond our data that we should be looking at for security purposes? It’s not about if you will get hacked; it’s when you will get hacked. What we need to envision are layers of security. So, your network, your firewall, and your router should all be updated to the latest firmware or revisions. Your computer should have antivirus and antimalware software. You should be using multifactor authentication for all the apps that you use on the web. All of these little layers allow for a penetration to happen to your network or computer, but what you hope will eventually happen is that one of these layers will catch it before it gets to you and your family and your business. And that’s what we always want to layer it up. It’s like a bulletproof vest. There are multiple layers of that vest that help prevent a bullet from hitting the target. “What layers do you have in place to protect your data? And when was the last time you had them updated or reviewed to make sure you are doing all you can to keep your company safe from hackers?” 3 Action Steps
Be sure to connect with Ryan Barrett on LinkedIn. Please comment below. I would love to hear from you. Have you ever gotten to the end of a hectic day or a busy month and said to yourself, “I thought I’d be further along by now…”?
You are not alone. And it could be with your short-term goals or those lifelong goals you set for yourself. Often, it leaves you thinking:
I want to invite you to explore what else could be true. First off, how are you measuring this thought of “not being where you thought you would”? Are you measuring it against the success of others? Are you measuring it based on your bank statement? Are you measuring it based on the engagement you have on social media? Or the number of sales you made last month? Perhaps you could use a different measure. What have you learned? How is life different for you now than 6, 12, 18 months ago? Where were you before & where are you now? What new connections do you have? How about ideas? Did you create something? What about the people you have served and THEIR results? Because there are lots of ways to measure success – and celebrate it. Let’s also be sure you’re giving yourself credit for doing something incredible in starting your business. It’s hard at times – and it can be scary – but what you did is brave. You took that huge step to start something new that fits with your drivers and your beliefs – and it is to be commended. And yes, as cliché as it may sound, Roy T. Bennet said, “Life is about accepting the challenges along the way, choosing to keep moving forward, and savoring the journey.” Have you taken the time to look at where your journey has taken you? Can you see the progress? It may be time to do just that. Finally, if this questioning of where you think you should be stems from mistakes that you’ve made along the way – embrace them. Know that even when you make mistakes, you’re learning and moving forward. They’re all part of the growth process. And they don’t define you. So, take a deep breath and put that thought aside because if I were a betting woman, I’d bet you’re right where you’re supposed to be. Please comment below. I would love to hear from you. How’s it going so far? Are you making strides towards those goals you set for 2021? I know you are because I’ve heard from many of you – and the progress is incredible.
And while you’ve been putting your plans into motion and reaching for those goals, I’ve got to ask – How are YOU doing? How’s your health? I ask because high-achievers and over-achievers have a tendency to go all-in – and sometimes things not related to the current goal get pushed aside – like your health. As people who LOVE people and care for them, we often put taking care of ourselves last. You may have noticed that you’re feeling fatigued, experiencing headaches, gaining weight, not eating a well-balanced diet, or feeling a bit more anxious. It’s pretty common. But you need to take care of YOURSELF! This isn’t a nice-to-have, it is must-have and your business success depends on it Because without a HEALTHY YOU – there will be no business. With that in mind, I want to introduce you to Dora Fioto – a personal health coach. Dora is a board-certified holistic health coach, and she creates customized solutions – that are NATURAL – to help you improve your health. She offers health coaching, Reiki, nutrition response testing, distance healing, and more! To get you started, she has shared this quick quiz that will help you better understand your relationship with sugar. You already know the power that coaching and an expert network can have on your business; just imagine what it can do for your health. If your health and wellness could use a little coaching – take a moment to take the quiz and let me know how it goes! Please comment below. I would love to hear from you. |
